1. A device combining a spring for closing and a compression chamber into which liquid or air escapes slowly, thus providing a means of controlling the speed of the closing action; also called a door check.
2. In elevators, a device or assembly of devices which closes an opened car or hoistway door by the use of gravity or springs.
